One big calorie bomb but oh so good that you won’t feel guilty after eating it. Lovely comfort food with loads and loads of cheese and very easy to make. It’s the most famous dish from America. It’s a classic dish but to add something new, I added caramelized onions to the recipe.

Ingredients mac & cheese:

- 450gr of macaroni pasta

- 110gr of butter

- 60gr of flour

- 1l milk

- 750gr of cheddar cheese

- 50gr of panko

- Salt

- Pepper

- Nutmeg

- Butter (extra)

Ingredients caramelized onions:

- 3 onions

- 3 tablespoons of caster/brown sugar

- Butter

- Salt

- Pepper

- 2 tablespoons of white balsamic vinegar


1. Heat a big pot with water to boil the macaroni. Add the macaroni to the boiling water. When pouring the macaroni into the colander, add some butter (so the macaroni doesn’t stick together).

2. In the meanwhile, cut the onions into fine, half rings.

3. Melt the butter in a stewpot. Add the flour and bake for about 3 minutes. It’s important to keep stirring the butter together with the flour, you don’t want the mixture to burn.

4. Add the milk little by little. Stir thoroughly with a whisk. Keep stirring until you get a thick mixture. Season with salt and pepper and add a little bit of nutmeg. Afterwards, turn down your fire and put the stewpot aside.

5. Add the cheddar to the stewpot and stir thoroughly so the cheese can melt.

6. Melt some butter in a frying pan on a high-fire. Add the onion rings to the frying pan and let it stove for a minute. Afterwards lower your fire.

7. Add the vinegar to your onions, afterwards add the sugar. Let is stove for about 13 minutes on a low-fire.

8. Preheat your oven on 165°C.

9. Use an ovenproof platter/dish. Butter the platter/dish. Add the cooked macaroni and add the caramelized onions, stir everything together.

10. Pour the mixture with the cheddar on top of the macaroni and onions mixture and stir everything together.

11. Grate some cheese on top of the platter/dish.

12. Melt some butter into a frying pan and add the panko to it. Let it stove for about 5 minutes on a low-fire. Keep stirring the panko so it doesn’t burn.

13. Divide the gold-brown panko on top of your mac & cheese platter/dish.

14. Put it in the oven for about 15 minutes.

And its ready :)
